Quark Expeditions: Antarctica, Day 8 (But Not Really Day 8)

Day 8, But not really day 8

When you sign up for the 8-day trip to Antarctica, you don’t actually sign up for 8 days in Antarctica. Day 1 is in Chile. Day 2 is half in South America and half in Antarctica. Days 3, 4, 5, and 6 are all full days in Antarctica. Day 7 is half in Antarctica and half in Chile, and day 8 is in Chile. Day 8, you don’t even do anything with Quark!

Day 8

Location: Punta Arenas, Chile to Puerta Natales

Agenda: Drive to Puerta Natales

On day 8, we woke up in south America on dry land, but feeling like we were still on a ship. Everyone moved as if the ground was gently rolling, just like the ship. We had a 4-hour drive up to Puerto Rico, and we wanted to get there early. So we packed our 12 bags into our rented van (it was filled from Top to Bottom) and drove up to Chile. The drive was very pretty, but it felt so long.

What Is All the Fuss About Patagonia???

I had always heard that Patagonia is SO beautiful and breathtaking and I really was skeptical. That was foolish of me…

The glare from my phone in the window makes it a bit less picturesque, but this is such a beautiful scene, right? This is basically what I looked like the whole time out of my window. Christmas with a view like this was…… AMAZING!!!!!

This was my last day in Antarctica, y’all!!! I am kinda poking fun at Quark for putting the 8th day on the trip because it really is not part of it at all! We didn’t do much; we just drove up to Puerta Natales, adjusted to the new house, and stared at the insane beauty surrounding us. I loved just staring out of the window because the sun was nice and warm, and it all seemed like something that you would only see in a dream, fairy tale, or movie. The best part is there is always a Very loud orchestra to accompany the sight. An orchestra of….. wind.

Wind House

I have never been in a windier place in my entire life!!! This wind was HARSH! Like being the walls and shaking the house! It wasn’t dangerous wind just really strong. Our host said that the winds got up to either 60 km (37mph) or 160 km (99.4221). I think it was 160 because this wind was really hard! As loud and disturbing as it was, I learned to like it. It added sound to the scenery and made all the clouds very beautiful. It also helped cool down the house when the sun heated it up too much. The wind was also extra harsh on us because we were on what we thought was the highest hill in a small trench/valley/fjord with mountains on either side. Our house was a perfect target for the gusts and bullets of wind. We could also see on the water how strong the wind was because it was creating huge whitecaps. Somehow, thankfully, we did not get swept up in a tornado and taken to Oz.

6-Day Trip to Antarctica

In my 6 days of seeing Antarctica, I was mesmerized. It was the trip of a lifetime, but there is no way it’s going to be once in a lifetime for me. One day I Will find my way back to Antarctica. The best way to do this seems to be to get a job in Antarctica which I probably can figure out how to do. I definitely will get back there. Someday 🙂

South African Penguins

The Scenery and the Drive

The scenery was amazing! The drive to the penguins was along the coast and through towns. We learned about the history of each town. At one point there was a tunnel that had one side open. I really enjoyed the drive and one thing I learned was, there was 14 mountains that were called the 11 apostles. If you are into awsome landscape photos I would highly recommend this drive!

Puppy the Seal

Puppy, in my opinion, is a funny name for a seal. It makes me think of a cute fat animal, wich is what Puppy is. When we saw him he was being hand fed by a man and he seemed to know what to do. We were told that he came up on the docks to get snacks and that he was very friendly. The friendly part might not be true. He was more exited about the food then anything. I think he did not mind us touching him and maybe he liked it but he was super exited about the food. While we were with Puppy I bought a really cute elephant satchel! We then moved on so we could see the penguins.

The Penguins

The penguins were awesome! We had to climb over some rocks witch was super fun. Then we had to wade through freezing water to get to the penguins. When I got to the place where the penguins were I saw what looked like a dead shark! I asked our guide and he confirmed it was a dead shark; and just to clarify, the shark was a baby so only a foot and a half long. The penguins were sitting on a rock and they would waddle into the water. I was surprised at how fast they could move under water. They were little bullets! We went to a second place with penguins but it had lots of people in it and it was less special.

Table Mountain South Africa

We went up Table Mountain in a Cable car! I could not say we climbed it because we did not. It is a must do if you visit Cape Town because the views are awesome. We had to get a uber to take us up to the tram. After that it was all waiting. We had to get tickets and then go up an elevator to get to the tram. The floor of the tram rotated as we went up the cliff. I found this a little un-fair because you chose the spot you wanted only to go round in circles. The ride up was pretty scary and I was relieved to finally be on solid ground. We did a small walk around the top and there was a small sign that was very interesting to me. It had a map of table mountain and the city below. Around the rim there were arrows pointing North, South, East, and West. I found one pointing to New York, Washington state, Paris, Oslo and many more! I enjoyed looking at it but I had to go for a family photo. We took photos of everyone and me and Bardez climbed over the fun rocks. When it was near sunset we were contemplating weather not not to stay for sunset when we heard a message: “ To our guests at Table Mountain the last cable car will leave at 7:00pm exactly”. They were saying if you did not get on this cable car, you would have to hike down. In the dark! This was outrageous! How could they say they were going to leave you on the mountain if there were too many people! We were saying well we can stay a little longer but a wave of people were surging to the cable car. We decided going down was better than being left behind so we got on the tram.

The ride down was way less scary than I thought. I had been very nervous about it but we arrived safely. The overall experience was very pleasant and positive. I would totally recommend it to anyone!

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Sunrise over Kruger on our way to the park

Today is Thursday and we were supposed to go to school again, but instead, we went to Kruger National Park! We had to wake up at 5:00 am and get in a safari vehicle with doors and a canvas roof to drive the hour to Kruger. Before we got to the ticket station we saw three elephants and one rhino! At 8:30 am, we had breakfast at a lookout point. Charlene had made us muffins that were so good! After breakfast, we drove more and saw a hyena and a lion!

Lioness in the Grass

The first lion in Kruger that we saw was a female in the shade of trees. We were driving down the road and there were a lot of cars idling in the road and on the side of the road. We were told that there was a lion somewhere in the field and we looked for about ten minutes without seeing anything. As we were driving away I saw the lion’s tail flick up through the tall grass and I told everyone. The lion was behind a giant root and under a tree and through all the time we were looking for it everyone kept saying there is nothing under the tree. The lion proceeded to sit up and look around for thirty seconds, then she laid back down again to sleep. A little while after the lion, we saw a herd of buffalo! They were mostly laying down in the tall grass so we could not see their full mass.

Pride of Lions

You might be wondering if we only saw the big five. No, we did see a lot of giraffes, antelopes, and wildebeest. After the buffalos, we drove around for a long while, and then we came upon a pride of lions! First, we just saw one mom with three cubs then we saw other lionesses. I also saw what looked like a male lion laying in the shade of a tree. It was a male, and in the end, there were eight females and four cubs, and one male! While watching the lions, we saw a herd of elephants visit the water hole very close to the lions! After the Lions, we went to see if the elephants were in an ideal place to see them and as we turned the corner on the road and the whole herd of elephants! There were a couple of bulls and some smaller elephants and one tiny baby.  The small one mostly hid behind the older ones but we got to see it briefly.  We stayed next to the elephants for 20 minutes then we moved on.  The air was literally as hot as the breath of an oven so we were all ready to go home.  Luckily, our driver said it would take us about 15-20 minutes to get out of the park. It took us 45.

Behind the Elephants

On our way down the dirt road we saw some giraffes and a wildebeest but we had seen so many and it was so hot that nobody went “Look a giraffe what an exotic animal!  we all just said “oh, there are four giraffes on the side of the road, what a surprise.”  After about 7 minutes of driving we got stuck behind a herd of big, slow elephants walking in the road.  We had no idea where they were going.  I was thinking, “they’re just trying to slow us down so they can be first to wherever they are going.”  All of the elephants except one went off the road.  This one elephant was going so slowly.  He was probably tired and hot like the rest of us but couldn’t he just get off the road?  No, he had to walk on the road, and poop on it.  Fresh elephant dung is very smelly especially when the elephant is ahead of you and the wind is blowing toward you.

Lunch Behind the Elephants

As we were driving slowly we got lunch out.  Lunch was under my seat so I had to get down on the floor and get out all the food and drinks.  Lunch was the best lunch wrap ever!  I bet the elephants were jealous:)  By the time we were eating lunch the elephants were all off the road.  We finally saw what they all were heading for.  A water hole!  Or a mud hole.  The elephants were playing in the mud and splashing themselves!  Three elephants had strayed from the group to drink from the fresh water spring, man-made! After the elephants got out of the way, we drove off.  The ride home was so hot and long!  At one point I pulled out my hair tie and my hair flew around and stood on end.  When we finally got home my face felt like it had been burnt by the wind
